Furnishings to Ditch, and Ones You Should Not Live Without

To create an elegant space for our clients, we edit our final designs to their most functional and beautiful components and eliminate all the unnecessary clutter. This helps us achieve an understated elegance that inspires our clients.

Throughout the Whole Home: Window Treatments

My single biggest must-have in every home is window treatments. They are pricey, but worth every penny! I like to think of window coverings as the eyebrow equivalent of a face- they're that final touch that you didn't even know you needed, but can't imagine living without! You can't go wrong with custom roman shades or drapery, they are a wise investment because they offer the finishing touch to complete any space.

Bedrooms: Pillows

This one may be a little controversial, but excess pillows on a bed is a waste of money and time... picking them up and taking them off is a thing of the past. We're replacing all those decorative pillows with a single long lumbar pillow, and we love the refined look it achieves. Husbands everywhere will be rejoicing!

Living and Family Room: End Tables

In a living room, where many clients opt to have a sectional, we recommend eliminating end tables because we find them redundant when there's already a coffee table in the room. They can clutter the room and often obstruct the flow traffic into the space. Instead, we might suggest a skinny floor lamp or tall plant if it feels like something needs to fill the void.

Dining Room: Hutch Cabinet

In dining rooms, you can do without a hutch-style cabinet. These were really popular in the age of displaying fine china, but they can quickly swallow up a budget unnecessarily. If you need storage for seasonal dinnerware, we suggest a sideboard instead paired with a mirror or artwork above it, which is both more economical and achieves an updated use of space.

Primary Bedroom: Make-Up Vanity

In primary bedrooms, we suggest ditching the vanity-style consoles (remember the ones with an attached mirror and a vanity stool?). These are a waste of money and space in our opinion, especially when the ensuite bathroom offers better lighting, larger mirrors, and more storage.

Entry: Floor Mirror

Finally, floor mirrors are also pricey but worth the expense. They look classy anywhere, especially in an entry, a bedroom, or even in a hallway.
